Korean drama (Korean: 한국드라마) refers to televised dramas, in a miniseries format, produced primarily in the Korean language. Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia, and beyond to the US and Europe, and have contributed to the general phenomenon of the Korean wave, known as "Hallyu", and also "Drama Fever" in some countries. Most popular Korean dramas have also become popular in other parts of the world such as Latin America, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Some of the most internationally popular Korean dramas are Winter Sonata, Dae Jang Geum, Full House, Stairway to Heaven, My Girl, Love Story in Harvard, Shining Inheritance, Autumn in My Heart, Yi San, Boys Over Flowers You're Beautiful and IRIS. The Korean drama Full House is one of the more well-known dramas. It featured the singer/actor "Rain" (Bi) as the male lead character.

Japanese cross-over - The drama "Hotelier" featured the actor Bae Yong Joon who is also popular in Japan. The recent 2009/2010 Iris is also being shown in Japan, as it was partially filmed there

Korean TV & Radio Stations in America

There are an estimated one and a half million people in the United States claiming Korean heritage. Supporting the almost 1.6 million Korean-Americans, there are several Korean TV and radio stations in America. There are also others available on cable and online. Here are some of the ones in major markets: Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, DC (including Virginia & Maryland).

Also, across much of the country, Arirang TV, MBC, SBS, YTN, and CTS available via satellite TV - Korean TV shows, many of them with English sub-titles.

    Radio: AM 1660 KRB (streamed live on it's website). May also be known as WWRU-AM, and may be based in Jersey City, NJ.

    MBCD channel 63.3 (digital)

 Washington, DC

    AM 1310 - WDCT Korean radio, which according to Wikipedia was previously owned by the family of US President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The format converted to Korean & English in the 1990's, and went all-Korean in 1998. Programming includes religious content, including this church's live broadcast on Sundays.

    WNVC-TV (Digital TV Channel 30-1, Channel 56) an independent non-commercial station in Fairfax, Virginia, and has a variety of world cultures, including some occasional Korean programming. Over the air, and also on some cable systems.
    WKTV - cable TV - Korean TV shows, many of them with English sub-titles. Also broadcasts daily local news in Korean, and re-broadcasts LA-based news in Korean. (website)

K-Expo on April 14th in College Park, MD (UMCP)

The University of Maryland in College Park's Korean Student Association will be holding their annual K-Expo show on April 14, 2010.

The event showcases Korean culture, and is the organization's largest event of the year, and is open to the general public. The location is the Stamp Student Union.

According to the Facebook event page: "Korean food will be provided for dinner with several performances, among which will be cultural performances of Korean martial arts and percussion. We will also exhibit a modern talent showcase where you fellow student artists will perform their amazing talents!"

The lunar new year started today, and there were celebrations world-wide. It also happens to be Valentine's Day, but this is a rare "once-in-a-lifetime" type of occurance.

DC area Korean meetups in the news & blogs

This month, the Korea Daily newspaper has done two stories about local area groups that are set up on The newspaper, and articles, are written in Korean (hangul).

The first article was written up Feb 17, 2009 on, and the second article appeared yesterday in the Metro section. Click on the image to enlarge:

The articles discuss how people - both with Korean backgrounds and those without - are interested in learning more about Korean culture, language, and more. These same people also help native Korean speakers improve their english.

And Korea native Angie Goff, who is part of the WUSA Channel 9 news team, also mentioned one of the articles & groups in her popular blog OH MY GOFF!.

Ahn Trio Concert & Interview

The musical trio group the Ahn Trio appeared two nights ago at the Strathmore Music Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The February 20, 2009 concert was well-attended, featuring songs from various of their albums. Many of the songs were from their new album, Lullaby For My Favorite Insomniac.

The night before the concert, the trio hosted an evening session for some music students and others who attended a lecture & demo related to their music. They were also interviewed (video below) about their music & background.

The trio will be back in the DC area for a concert in Reston on March 21 at 3pm (Reston Community Center ticket info). More information about them can be found on their website - - and on their MySpace page, which also has some of their music.
